How to start your own hair extension business
Most masters start from home or a rented chair with under $500 in tools, then move to a private studio once they have fifteen regular clients. The decisive factor is not premises or equipment but a repeat client base that returns every two to three months.
Stage one: working without premises
Home visits or a rented chair inside an existing salon. Costs stay minimal, and the only real requirements are good lighting, a chair at working height and clean tools. This stage exists to build the first fifteen clients, not to look impressive.
Stage two: a rented chair or shared studio
A fixed place raises your perceived value and lets you keep stock on site. Chair rent is usually a fixed monthly fee or a percentage. Take this step when your calendar is consistently full, not before.
Stage three: your own studio
One or two chairs, your own brand, your own schedule. The maths only works when repeat corrections cover the rent before any new client is booked. If a quiet month would put you in difficulty, it is too early.
The numbers to track from day one
- Number of regular clients returning for correction
- Average labour fee per service
- Materials cost as a share of the fee
- How many new clients came from referrals versus advertising
The fourth number is the health check: a business where most new clients come from referrals is stable; one that depends on paid advertising is fragile.
Legal and practical basics
Register in the form your country requires, keep receipts for materials, and take a written consent for photographs before using client images. Insurance is inexpensive and worth having from the first paying client.
When to raise prices instead of working more
When you are booked two weeks ahead, raise your fee by ten to fifteen per cent rather than adding hours. Capacity in this profession is limited by your hands; income is not.
Hiring your first master
Only once you are turning clients away regularly. Train them in your protocol, keep the consultation yourself at first, and pay per service rather than a fixed salary until the flow is proven.
