Hair extension correction and removal: the professional protocol
Correction is performed every two to three months and takes almost as long as the original application: bonds are removed, the natural hair is detangled and treated, and strands are reattached at the new root position.
Why correction is not optional
Hair grows roughly one centimetre a month. After three months the bond sits three centimetres from the scalp, rotates freely and begins to gather surrounding hair around itself. What clients call "hair loss from extensions" is almost always matting from postponed correction.
The removal stage
Bonds are softened with the appropriate remover for the technique, then opened mechanically without pulling. The rule is simple: if force is required, the bond is not yet ready. Every forced removal costs the client hair.
Detangling and treatment
After removal there will be shed hair held in place by the bonds — this is normal and should be explained to the client in advance, before they see it. The natural hair is then detangled from the ends, washed and treated before reattachment.
Reattachment
Strands are checked for condition and reused if they are still in good order; typically hair can be reused for two to four corrections depending on quality and home care. Attachment points should be varied slightly rather than placed in identical positions each time.
Timing and pricing
Allow three to four hours and price at sixty to eighty per cent of a full application. Masters who treat correction as a quick favour lose money on their most loyal clients.
Preparing the client for what she will see
Explain before removal that shed hair will appear in the bonds and that this is hair which would have fallen naturally over three months. Clients who see it without warning conclude the extensions destroyed their hair, and no explanation afterwards fully repairs that impression.

- Section the head as for application, working zone by zone
- Soften each bond fully — never open a bond that still resists
- Detangle from the ends immediately after each section is freed
- Wash and treat the natural hair before reattaching
- Reassess density; hair condition may have changed since the last visit
- Vary attachment points slightly from the previous placement
When to refuse a correction
If the client has waited five months and the root is heavily matted, the honest option is removal plus recovery care, not a same-day reattachment. Forcing a correction onto compromised hair protects the booking and costs you the client.
