Tape-in vs bonded hair extensions: which should a master offer?
Tape-in extensions are faster to apply and cheaper for the client but need re-taping every 6–8 weeks. Bonded extensions take longer, cost more and last 2–3 months, and they allow far more precise placement on fine hair or short cuts.
How each method attaches
A tape-in weft is sandwiched around a thin section of the client's own hair with medical-grade adhesive. A bonded extension attaches a small individual strand at a single point, either with heated keratin or with a cold compound.
Application time and price
- Tape-in — 60–90 minutes for a full head, lower price, wide competition
- Bonded — 3–5 hours, higher price, fewer masters offering it
The commercial difference matters: tape-in fills your calendar, bonded fills your income. Most established masters offer both and let the client's hair decide.
Where tape-in wins
Straight, medium-thickness hair with no short layers, clients who want a quick change before an event, and clients who prefer a lower entry price. Tapes also sit flat, which suits fine hair worn down.
Where bonded wins
Short cuts, uneven layers, very fine hair at the temples, and any case where the attachment must be invisible when hair is tied up. Individual strands can be placed exactly where density is missing, which a weft cannot do.
Maintenance reality
Tape-ins need re-taping every six to eight weeks and the tapes themselves are consumed each time. Bonded extensions go two to three months between corrections and the hair can be reused. Over a year the client often pays a similar total — but visits the tape-in master more often.
What clients complain about
- Tape-in — slipping in humid climates, visible edges on very fine hair, adhesive residue
- Bonded — bonds felt at the roots if the capsule is too large, matting when correction is postponed
Both complaints are avoidable, and both come down to whether the master chose the method for the client's hair or for their own schedule.
