Blending extensions with short hair and layers
Short hair can carry extensions when the strands are placed in layered rows and cut into the client's own shape afterwards. The blend depends on layering and cutting, not on the number of strands — adding volume without cutting is what creates the visible shelf clients hate.
The minimum length rule
Roughly eight to ten centimetres of the client's own hair is needed for a secure attachment. Below that the bond has nothing to hold and will show as the hair moves. Bob-length hair is comfortably workable; a pixie cut is not.
Why the shelf appears
A visible horizontal line forms where long added hair meets short natural hair with no gradient between them. The fix is not more strands — it is placing strands at several different heights so the transition is gradual.
Layered placement
- Lowest rows: full added length
- Middle rows: shorter strands, cut to sit between the two lengths
- Upper rows near the crown: shortest, blending into the client's own layers
This means cutting extension hair to different lengths before or after attachment — the step beginners skip.
Cutting into the client's shape
Extensions arrive blunt. Point-cutting the ends and softening the perimeter is what makes the result read as her hair rather than a curtain attached to her head. Dry-cut after the hair is styled, so you cut what the client will actually see.
Managing the front
The face-framing area is where the blend is judged. Use the smallest capsules here, keep the added length shorter than at the back, and never place a bond where it can be seen through a parting.
Setting expectations honestly
Tell a short-haired client that the first extension will look best after a cut, and that the maximum realistic length is shorter than what she may have seen on longer hair. Clients accept this at consultation; they do not accept it when they see the result.
